On January 14, 1814 the Imperial Public Library in St. Petersburg opened for all visitors
More than 200 people joined the celebration. Among them were the well-known personalities like Gavriil Derzhavin, Orest Kiprensky, Aleksander Vostokov and Vasily Stasov. During the first decade the library had a customer flow around 600 people every year. The readers were of very different backrounds and social statuses. Merchants, scientists, bourgeois, civil servants, military men and clergymen were all buying the tickets to visit the library.
