The schoolbook for young people of high society was published in St. Petersburg

04 February, Wednesday

On February 4, 1717 the first edition of an educational schoolbook «Yunosti chesnoe zertsalo» for young people of high society came out

The name «Yunosti chesnoe zertsalo» roughly translates as «The mirror of the honorable youth». The publishing was decreed by Peter the Great, who took European educational schoolbooks as a reference. The Russian statesman and military leader Jacob Bruce became one of the authors. The book formed a new stereotype of a high-born person's behavior: a young man or woman was advised to choose the appropriate society, avoid drinking alcohol, be polite at all times and keep to European way of conduct. The schoolbook became a great success.
