Pietro MASCAGNI.CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA. Concert version of the opera. On May 31, 2017 St.Petersburg Palaces International Music Festival opens its XXV anniversary season

Ceremonial opening of the festival will take place at the luxurious interior of the Heraldic Hall of the Winter Palace (State Hermitage).

The music part of the evening is preceded by a grand ceremony.

A unique concert version of one of the most popular operas – Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni – will be presented at the festival opening.

World’s opera stars, such as one of the best performers of Santuzza’s role Chiara Taigi (soprano, Italy), brilliant Spanish tenor Sergio Escobar, soloists of the Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky Theatres, combined choir which includes St.Petersburg State University Choir, Chamber Choir Urbi et Orbi and Chamber Choir Consonance of the St.Petersburg State Technological Institute, as well as Taurida International Symphony Orchestra will take part in the performance.

One of the best contemporary Maestros Marco Guidarini (Italy) will conduct the Taurida orchestra. Guidarini is well-known in Europe and outside it as an outstanding opera and symphony conductor. Today Marco Guidarini can be called one of the brightest and most wanted conductors of contemporary Europe. Great aesthetics and expressiveness of his gestures make his artistic style stand out. His talents allow him to work with many different ensembles from various countries of the world.

An outstanding opera composer Pietro Mascagni was renowned and successful during his life. P.I. Tchaikovsky wrote that “he (Mascagni) understood that at present time the spirit of realism can be sensed everywhere, art meeting the truth of life, that humans with their passions and sorrows are closer and more comprehensible to us than gods or demigods. With purely Italian plasticity and beauty he illustrated selected life dramas, which resulted in a work of art, almost irresistibly pretty and attractive for the audience”.

Cavalleria rusticana, first staged in Rome in 1890, had a great success with the audience and conquered the stages of Europe, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. A tragic love story is in the center of the work. The dramatic plot of the opera is based on real events of the Italian province, where complete impunity and glorification of murders based on jealousy existed until the end of XX and even later, though it was eradicated during the reign of Mussolini.

Mascagni’s period of creativity coincided with the reign of Mussolini, and he adored his music and generously funded him. Even despite the fact that he was a contemporary and a friend of an Italian opera genius Giacomo Puccini. Years later, the melodies from this opera became hits and ensured immortality of the great work of art.
