On March 8, 1900 the artistic movement «Mir iskusstva» («World of Art») was established in Saint Petersburg
The artist Alexandre Benois and the theatrical figure Sergei Diaghilev were the founders of the association. Many Russian artists joined the group, among them Konstantin Somov, Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Nicholas Roerich and Eugene Lansere. Artists of the «Mir iskusstva» considered priority the esthetic beginning in art and aspired to a modernist style and symbolism, opposing to ideas of the itinerants. The group also issued a magazine under the same name.
