The outset of the Mikhailovsky Castle

09 March, Monday

On March 9, 1797 the first stone of the Mikhailovsky Castle was laid

The palace was named «Mikhailovsky Castle» by Paul I who had been granted the title of a Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and preferred the word «castle» to «palace». The new castle was called after the Archangel Michael Church, located inside the building. It is often also named «Inzhenerny» (Engineer's), as the castle used to house the Main Nikolaevsky Engineering school since 1823.
