June 12, 1946 is the day of the premiere of the first part of Sergei Prokofiev's opera «War and Peace» in Mikhaylovsky Theatre
It took the famous Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev 12 years to create this major opera masterpiece. Traslating the novel by Leo Tolstoy into music Prokofiev managed to combine a new musical genre — a composition of drama, opera, epos and oratorio. The premiere of the first part of the opera (scenes 1—8), describing times of peace, was very successbul and was awarded a State Prize. During the next season the theatre planned staging the second part of the opera, but the performance was postponed, as the opera needed another iteration.
