On May 13, 1836 the construction of the first public railway started
The railrway ran from St. Petersburg to Tsarskoye Selo and Pavlovsk. It was the first public railroad in the country. The project was managed by an Austrian engineer Franz Gerstner. Almost every element of the new railroad was delivered from abroad. At first all of the trains were on horse traction, and steam traction was used only on Sundays. The trip to Tsarskoye Selo from Petersburg took around 35 minutes.
