UNWTO General Assembly will be held on a high level

On 19 January, Georgy Poltavchenko, the Governor of St. Petersburg, visited Madrid as the head of St. Petersburg delegation. He met with Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili, who selected at this post on January 1, 2018. Andrey Mushkarev, the head of the Tourism Development Committee of St. Petersburg was also included in delegation.

During a meeting were discussed the issues of St. Petersburg preparation for the 23rd General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization in 2019. The decision to hold the world's largest tourism forum in our city was taken last year on the 22nd session of the General Assembly, held in Chengdu (People's Republic of China).

Georgy Poltavchenko noted the constructive attitude of the UNWTO leadership to the General Assembly in St. Petersburg.  “Secretary-General of UNWTO Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili considers forthcoming meeting in St. Petersburg as another stage of international tourism development and additional possibility of opening for travelers not only Petersburg but also the whole Russia”, said Governor.

The city of St. Petersburg has large experience in organizing major international events. City also has all necessary infrastructure, such as modern airport, developed hotel network, large high-tech Congress and Exhibition Center. St. Petersburg occupies a leading position among the regions of Russia on tourist attraction and it is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. For the third year in a row, St. Petersburg becomes the prestigious "World Travel Awards" winner. Georgy Poltavchenko assured that a meeting of the General Assembly in St. Petersburg will be held at the highest organizational level.

Georgy Poltavchenko visited one of the most important events in the world of tourism industry - International Exhibition FITUR. It is held with the support of the World Tourism Organization in the biggest exhibition centre in the Spain capital - IFEMA Feria de Madrid.

St. Petersburg annually takes part in the exhibition FITUR. This year the St. Petersburg exposition is dedicated to the World Cup holding. “Our city exposition stand is very popular. Many visitors are interested in St. Petersburg, especially representatives of Latin American countries. They are interested in our preparation for Worlds Cup, because performances of Latin American teams are planned in our city. "It will give us an opportunity to attract new tourists from these countries," Georgy Poltavchenko said.

The Governor also met with Taleb Rifai, former UNWTO Secretary-General. Georgy Poltavchenko noted the Taleb Rifai contribution to the development of the World tourism industry, as well as the strengthening of cooperation between St. Petersburg and UNWTO.
