The day of Russian animation is celebrated every year on the 8th of April.
In 2012 it was 100 years since the first official animation premiere in Russia.
On April 8, 1912 a premiere of Russian animated film “The Beautiful Lucanide”, telling a tragic love story of two insects, took place. That date was chosen to be celebrated as Russian animation day. It was Vladislav Starevich, a biologist, who created the stop motion animated film, using dissected insects and frame by frame shooting. The quality of his work made a splash among public. Many people believed that there were living trained insects involved in the shooting.
Stop motion animation has become very popular, not only in Russia, but also abroad. It was a real breakthrough in animation art for the time.
