Water areas of St. Petersburg will be cleaned of garbage

On April 17 summer water cleaning began, according to the Committee on Nature Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety of St. Petersburg.
The cleaning and purification of water areas from flooded pollution and debris is carried out by the Committee continuously throughout the year. In winter, garbage collection is done from the ice surface manually, in summer - it is cleaned manually only in water bodies, non-navigable rivers and drying up areas of the water area. In the waters of navigable rivers cleaning is carried out using swimming facilities.
In accordance with the address program, in 2020, the cleaning and purification of water from garbage will be carried out at 331 water bodies in 18 districts of the city. Work will be carried out from 1 to 9 times a month, depending on the recreational significance of the water body.
“Carrying out measures for cleaning and water areas purification and mowing aquatic vegetation can significantly improve the environmental parameters of water bodies, prevent secondary pollution of the aquatic environment, improve shipping safety, and improve the appearance of the city,” comments Denis Baidukov, head of the safety department for hydraulic structures and water facilities of the Committee for Nature Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety of St. Petersburg.
