The Maslenitsa festival in St. Petersburg will be celebrated on a grand scale
11 March 2021
This week is the most "delicious" of the year, because Maslenitsa is celebrated all over Russia.
This festival goes back centuries, and the customs associated with it are carefully preserved and passed down through the generations. Butter week symbolizes the border between winter and spring. Traditionally, it is held brightly and cheerfully: bustling games and activities are arranged, circle dances are performed, pancakes ("bliny") are baked, and at the end of the festival a symbolic effigy of Lady Maslenitsa made of straw is burned in a ritual bonfire. Celebrations on a grand scale await citizens and tourists in the upcoming weekend.
