The Circus on the Fontanka River will celebrate the World Circus Day with the "Parade of Dynasties"

12 April 2021

Rosgostsirk (Russian State Circus) has prepared a grand program for the World Circus Day, which is celebrated in many countries on the third Saturday of April.

The most important event of the celebration will be the All-Russian "Parade of Dynasties". As part of the all-Russian celebration program, a series of entertainment events will take place at the Grand Saint Petersburg State Circus: an open rehearsal for pupils of the city's circus schools; circus exhibitions; contests, lotteries and master classes, as well as planting trees in Novo-Manezhny garden square on Manezhnaya  square by hereditary artists.

Festive events will be held both online and offline. The clown costume contest, which started on April 5 on social media, opens the plentiful program of the festival. The events will end on April 17, World Circus Day, with the performance by the Togni Italian Circus.

Timetable of events dedicated to the celebration of World Circus Day:

April 5 – online “Clown Costume” contest in the official VKontakte group. Participants should take selfies wearing effective clown costumes and send them to the administration of the group, where voting for the best costume will take place from April 12 to April 15. The winner will be announced on the eve of World Circus Day and will be invited to the performance of the Togni Italian Circus.

April 9 15:00 – Togni Italian Circus open rehearsal for pupils of the city's circus schools. Reviving the tradition of open rehearsals, the artists have opened the curtain that hides a workshop where the most complicated performances are created. At the rehearsal, the audience talked with the laureates of the "Golden Clown" award of the 38th International Festival of Circus Art in Monte Carlo, aerialists Malvina Abakarova, Valery Sychev and Olga Lozbineva; acrobats on a counter swing directed by the Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Alexander Skokov, laureates of numerous international festivals – jugglers led by Elena Drogaleva. The open rehearsal was conducted by the head of the Great Saint Petersburg State Circus, Yuri Lysenko, and an employee of the Museum of Circus Art, Yulia Osipova.

April 15, 13:00 – planting trees in Novo-Manezhny garden square (Manezhnaya square) by Russian artists, representatives of the Russian circus and famous circus dynasties. Trees have been regarded as special plants for families since ancient times. "Family tree", "Genus tree", "Dynasty tree" – it's all about that. The event of planting seedlings will be a vivid visualization of the stories told by circus families and a way to immortalize the memory of their ancestors.

The place for planting the trees is not random. Before Ciniselli circus, the first stationary circus in Russia, appeared on Manezhnaya square in 1872, a wooden circus that belonged to Carl Hinnee, one of Ciniselli’s close relatives, was located here. After Hinnee departed from Petersburg, Ciniselli obtained the permission to buy this territory and build a circus here. There were some fears that the circus would prevent people from seeing the facade of the Engineer Castle, but Ciniselli neutralized them by promising to fund creating a garden square on Mikhailovskaya square (called Manezhnaya square now).

This square still exists. On April 15, 11 maples will be planted here. Each of the trees will symbolize a Russian dynasty that glorified circus art all over the world: Hinnee and Chiniselli, Zapashny, Nikulins, Abakarovs, Sudarchikovs, Kornilovs, Bagdasarovs, Kostyuk, representatives of the Togni dynasty, the oldest one in Europe, and the largest circus company in the world –  the Russian State Circus.

April 17 – the celebration will begin with the ceremony of a midday shot from the Naryshkin bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress at 12:00, with representatives of the Russian State Circus and the oldest circus dynasties participating.

The celebration of the World Circus Day will be continued in the Circus on Fontanka with the popular tradition of involving young artists from children's circus schools. All guests of the circus will be offered to take part in the lottery in a specially designed area (exhibition hall on the second floor) and in the circus quest whose answers will be hidden in the expositions on the first and third floors. Correctly fulfilled tasks will give you the opportunity to receive a memorable gift from the circus.
