 Музей Арктики и Антарктики: Выставка «Хозяин Арктики»

The event is dedicated to the International Polar Bear Day, which is celebrated annually on February 27th.

The white or polar bear has been considered the “master” of the Arctic for centuries. Encounters with the largest predator of the Arctic zone were first described by the members of the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1596-1597.

This day is significant not only for ecologists, but also for zoos, especially for the Leningrad Zoo, its symbol being the polar bear. It was in Leningrad in the 1930s that the regular breeding of polar bears was achieved for the first time ever. From 1932 to the present day, more than 80 cubs have been raised in the Leningrad Zoo.

The exhibition is open daily until September 1; free admission available each Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
