Spacious mansion of His Serene Highness Prince Saltykov

The mansion on the corner of the Palace Embankment and Suvorovskaya Square was designed by Giacomo Quarenghi and built in 1788. Empress Catherine II presented the building to Field Marshal Prince Nikolai Ivanovich Saltykov. He was engaged in the education of the future Emperor Alexander I and Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich. Famous St. Petersburg politicians and officers, including military leaders, visited Saltykov, among them Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov and Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov.

In the XIX century, the Saltykov family rented the house, there were the embassies of foreign countries - Austria, Denmark and Great Britain. Until 1828 the house church of the Resurrection of Christ was also located in the building. After the revolution of 1917, the building was nationalized, and educational institutions for young people were opened in it. At present, the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture is located in the former Saltykov mansion. Some historical interiors of the mansion have been preserved to this day: the Grand Staircase, the White Hall, the corridors with stucco and bas-reliefs.
