St. Catherine's Cathedral in Pushkin
Pushkin, Sobornaya pl., 1
St. Catherine's Church is one of the architectural attractions of the city of Pushkin. It is located on Sobornaya Square surrounded by Soborny Mini-Park. The temple, which was reconstructed according to the design of the 19th century, stands at the site of its predecessor, built by order of Emperor Nicholas I by the famous architect Konstantin Ton in the 1830s. It was consecrated in 1840 in the presence of Nicholas I himself and Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich. However, in 1939 the church was demolished, and a monument to Vladimir Lenin was erected in its place.
The new cathedral was erected in accordance with architect Kon's pre-revolutionary plan on the foundation of the old one. The foundation itself was recognized in 2001 as an object of cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia. When the church was started, a stone with an engraved memorial inscription was put in the place where the new altar was to be located. It tells you that the temple was recreated in memory of the tragic events of 1917 that affected Tsarskoye Selo and its inhabitants, in gratitude for their feat.
The construction was completed in 2010, but the works on the interior are still ongoing. The cathedral features a tabernacle with the relics of St. John of Tsarskoye Selo.
