Petergofskoe sh., 75
Memorial to the First Marines’ Assault, which made a huge contribution to the defense of Leningrad at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Tribute to the Heroes.
During the Great Patriotic War, the German Nazi troops, having closed the blockade ring around Leningrad, reached the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland in the area between Novy Peterhof and the Coal Pier. The enemy approached the city at a distance of a direct artillery shot, in addition, the Leningrad - Kronstadt waterway got under enemy fire. From the first day, the Leningrad Front headquarters, headed by G.K. Zhukov, began to look for opportunities for a counteroffensive in this vital area.
The first detachment of marines was landed on October 3, 1941 in the place where the Baltiets Yacht Club is now located. The landing batch consisted of 225 people, it included men of the 6th separate Marine Brigade, the 20th NKVD Rifle Division and the militia.
The fierce and unexpected attack forced the enemy to pull large forces from other areas, which allowed the command to gain time to strengthen its southern section of defense. During the battle, almost all the marines died under enemy strikes.
The townspeople honor the immortal feat of the marines, their memory is immortalized in granite. The memorial to the fallen Heroes was installed at the expense of the residents of the district, with the active participation of the "Baltiets" yacht club.
