Museum of the History of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg State University
Peterhof, Ulyanovskaya ul., 1
The exhibits on the history of mathematics, mechanics, astronomy and the physics section feature physical instruments, historical materials, models of 19th century mechanisms, including mechanisms made by the famous Russian mathematician and mechanic, academician P. L. Chebyshev.
Program "Remarkable Mathematical Curves (Ellipse, Cycloid, Cardioid, Trochoid)"
During the lesson at the museum, students will hear a story about mathematical curves: ellipse, cycloid, cardioid, trochoid, as well as about the mathematicians who studied these curves. The children will see kinematic models from the 19th century demonstrating the construction of these curves. One of the models is the prototype of the children's toy "Spirograph". Using a spirograph, you can draw various trochoids on a sheet of paper and compare them with the curves that are demonstrated by the models of mechanisms.
