1894 is considered the year of construction of the wooden house on Novo-Aleksandrovskaya Street, 23 (According to the technical description of the house from the 1960s according to Shilov's book). In 1894, Lenin appears beyond the Nevskaya Zastava and according to all data, he came to Shelgunov in 1894-95. So the history of our house began with Lenin.

Was Vladimir Lenin ever in this house?

In 1894-1895, the young 25-year-old Ulyanov (Lenin) spent a lot of time beyond the Nevskaya Zastava. By that time, he was a former student at Kazan University, expelled for unrest and disorder.

He first took up revolutionary work here, beyond the Nevskaya Zastava. Lenin was assisted in this by worker Vasily Shelgunov. They met after Ilyich moved to St. Petersburg in 1893. In the summer of 1894, Shelgunov moved from Gavan beyond the Nevskaya Zastava, and from that time on, Lenin began visiting him at 23 Novo-Aleksandrovskaya Street. Shelgunov himself recalled that Lenin “visited here more than once, especially in 1895,” and that in his room on Novo-Aleksandrovskaya “there were meetings about circles and where to send a propagandist.”

The importance of Lenin's name played its role more than once: the house was not dismantled during the Blockade and the construction of the 128th quarter and was turned into a museum.
