In memory of the forgotten profession.

The bronze monument was erected on Odessa Street in 1998 to perpetuate the memory of the disappeared profession of a lamplighter. The sculptural composition is a kind of symbol of scientific and technological progress. It was on Odessa Street that the laboratory-workshop of the inventor A.N. Lodygin was located. The great scientist installed the world's first electric lantern in St. Petersburg in 1873, for which he later received the Lomonosov Prize.

The statue depicts a typical lamplighter of St. Petersburg of the XIX century – a long cloak and boots, on his head - a cap with a high band. A tired man with sadness in his eyes is sitting on a sidewalk fence with a ladder and a rope in his hands. The height of the sculpture is 183 centimeters. The composition is complemented by 6 antique lanterns on various fancy pillars, as well as 2 memorial plaques.

The idea of the complex creation belongs to a well-known local historian in St. Petersburg – Sergey Borisovich Lebedev. The project was implemented by sculptors B.M. Sergeev and O.N. Pankratova, architect V.L. Spiridonov and master caster Manzevitov.

After the monument was erected, a belief was born that
if you rub the boots of a bronze worker, it will certainly bring u a good luck
and wealth to your house.
