Monument to G.A. Tovstonogov
Petrovskaya emb., 2/2
When we say “theatre” we mean Georgiy Aleksandrovich Tovstonogov. The Chief director and the artistic director of the Bolshoi Drama theatre in St.Petersburg immortalized in bronze in the square named after his name right next to his house №4 on the Petrovskaya embankment, within walking distance from the House of Peter the Great –the only surviving structure from Peter's times. The Grand opening of the monument took place in 2010.
The melody written by Isaac Schwarz to the famous performance staged by Tovstonogov «Woe from Wit» was played at the ceremony. In total, Tovstonogov staged 164 performances in the USSR and 11 performances abroad. The authors of the monument are sculptor Ivan Korneev and architect Vyacheslav Bukhaev.
Maestro is depicted full-length in the characteristic position he often took at rehearsals. The statue of the director is mounted on a pedestal of red granite. Three of the four facets of the pedestal have undergone minimal treatment as a tribute to the identity of the talent and the careful attitude to actors of G.A. Tovstonogov. Only the front face of the pedestal is polished, it bears the inscription “To Director GEORGIY TOVSTONOGOV (1915-1989)”.
