Museum of the St. Petersburg Paper Mill "Goznak"

Before the revolution, the Expedition for the Procurement of State Papers had two museums: one at the papermaking department, the other at the testing department.

The first museum was founded in 1897 by engineer-technologist N.A. Reztsov, who at that time worked as the head of the papermaking department of the Expedition. This was the first museum of papermaking in Russia. It introduced the development of paper production in the country and, in particular, in the Expedition for the Procurement of State Papers. Here were presented collections of samples of raw materials and paper, both Russian and foreign factories. The pride of the museum was the exposition of paper samples with watermarks.

In the museum at the testing department of the Expedition, one could get acquainted with samples of state papers (banknotes, bonds, bills, etc.), illustrated publications printed in the Expedition, samples of galvanoplastic art products.

The museums operated at the enterprise until 1919. During this period, the printing and engraving and art departments were evacuated to Moscow, and the museum exhibits were transported along with them. Today, they are stored in the Special Fund of Goznak.

In 1977, a museum was opened at the factory, displaying the history of the organization and development of the Leningrad Paper Mill of Goznak.

Today, visitors can see the exhibition, which is a single exhibition space in 4 halls with an area of about 200 square meters. The material presented in the halls is linked chronologically and covers the historical period from the time of Peter the Great to the present day. Text and illustrative materials will allow visitors to view the exhibition without a guide. Rare examples of lithophanes, scoop forms, paper samples with watermarks, as well as the use of computer technology as presentation equipment made it possible to create a modern exhibition.

The first hall presents the history of government papers, starting with the appearance of stamped paper, monetary reforms of the XVIII and XIX centuries of the Expedition for the Procurement of Government Papers during the first hundred years of its work. A special place in this hall is occupied by the desk and chair of the manager of the Expedition, Prince B.B. Golitsyn.

The second hall is dedicated to the work of the enterprise at the beginning of the 20th century. Photographic materials give an idea of how paper was cast by hand; all departments of the Expedition: papermaking, printing, engraving and art, and repair and mechanical. The display case of the exhibition presents printed publications of this unique enterprise. Here you can also see in photographs the Expedition's theater, its Technical School, church, store and other departments of the Expedition.

You can get acquainted with the Soviet period of the activity of the St. Petersburg Paper Mill and its present day in the third hall. One of the display cases in the hall presents advertising products of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Goznak".

Visitors can enter their arrival and departure times from the museum on a special card on an antique time clock.

The fourth hall of the exhibition presents paper with watermarks. Here you can see stamped paper made in the XVIIIth – XIXth centuries, paper for documents and banknotes, postal paper, scoop forms and watermarks with portraits of political leaders, writers and poets, with images of landmarks. The display case of the hall displays banknotes that were first made in the Expedition for the Preparation of State Papers, and then in Soviet times in the Goznak Association. The decoration of this hall is the lithophanes (wax copies) from the paintings of Aivazovsky, Giorgione, made by Goznak artists.
