The monument of church architecture of the XVIII century with unique murals

The building of the Annunciation Church on Vasilievsky Island was originally wooden. The architect Giuseppe Trezzini was the author of the project of the temporary church. In the XVIII century the parishioners of the ancient wooden church were Vasily Kirillovich Trediakovsky and Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov.

In 1750, a seven-altar stone church in the Russian Baroque style was built next to the wooden church at the expense of St. Petersburg merchants Herodion Chirkin and his son. The construction of the church was completed in 1762, and in the 1870s a four-tiered bell tower was built nearby. The modern temple complex also includes a tent chapel built in 1899. In the XVIII-XIX centuries there was a cemetery at the church.

Now the Annunciation Garden is laid out in its place. After the closure of the church in Soviet times, parish life resumed only in 1992. During the restoration of the Lower Temple experts discovered original wall paintings under layers of Soviet paint preserved from the first half of the XIX century.
