The museum's exhibition area covers 3,750 m². The museum's exhibitions cover the entire territory of the former USSR. The permanent exhibition features around 80,000 specimens.
Exhibits on regional geology are located in three halls (European, Asian and partly Central) and are systematised according to the original geological and geographical principle of regionalisation. For each region the main types of rocks are presented, grouped by general, regional and local stratigraphic subdivisions or complexes and geological age, guiding forms of organic remains, and main types of minerals. The rock material is accompanied by graphic materials (maps, diagrams, columns, sections) and explanatory texts.
