The garden's development began in 1768 by the chief gardener H. Eckleben.

In 1844, K.A. Ton developed a plan for a regular Academic Garden. A.P. Bryullov in 1847 provided a new plan, according to which the layout of the garden has survived to this day. Paths were laid here, a fence was installed, and in 1847, a granite column appeared at the intersection of the central alleys.

Initially, according to Voronikhin's design, the column was crowned with a ball. After its installation in the garden, the ball was replaced with a symbol of the arts - a lyre.

In 1890, according to the design of V.A. Kenel, a metal garden fence with gates was built. In 1897, a Battle Studio was built in the southwestern corner of the garden, where sketches were created from sitters on horseback.

On the side of the fourth line of Vasilievsky Island, there was an annex to the garden, a foundry workshop where Baron P. Klodt worked - the author of the sculptural groups of the Anichkov Bridge, the monument to I.A. Krylov in the Summer Garden and the monument to Nicholas I on St. Isaac's Square. Today, a sculptural image of Klodt standing at a machine with a model of the monument to Nicholas I decorates the garden of the Academy of Arts.
