One of the important addresses of the literary life of St. Petersburg in the XIX century
In 1854-1856, I. S. Turgenev, who was an employee of the Sovremennik magazine at the time, rented an apartment in the house. Here he wrote the novel Rudin, and here the idea for A Nest of the Gentry arose. The magazine's employees gathered in his apartment: N. A. Nekrasov, I. I. Panayev, A. F. Pisemsky, A. N. Tolstoy, A. N. Ostrovsky.
In 1855, L. N. Tolstoy, who had arrived from Sevastopol, stayed in Stepanov's house.
