Nakhimov Naval School
Petrogradskaya nab., 2
A closed-type naval institution aimed at preparing students for study at military universities.
The main facade of the building faces Bolshaya Nevka. The facade is emphatically asymmetrical. Its semantic center is strongly shifted to the right. In the center of the main composition at the level of the third floor is a cartouche with a bronze bust of Peter in a cuirass and ermine mantle based on sketches by A. N. Benois. Under it, two figures of infants hold a veil with the inscription: "FATHER OF THE FATHERLAND". The sculptural decoration of the facade is crowned by a huge relief, in the center of which are two crossed Latin letters "P" - the emperor's monogram: Peter Prime. To the right and left of the image are young athletes holding a heavy lion skin, on which below at the level of the fifth floor is installed a clock from the famous company "Winter". Clocks of this company are installed on the Admiralty Tower, on the tower of the Moscow Station, and also on the Duma Tower. A thin spire with a ship on top rises above the raised roof of the pediment.
The school was founded in 1944, the year of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade. At the request of the city authorities, the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR decided to create a school for 500 students - for the placement, training and education of the sons of the defenders of the Motherland who died on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War
On September 8, 1944, the first enrollment in the Leningrad Nakhimov School took place. In the first academic year, 408 students aged 10 to 14 sat at their desks. In 1948, its first graduation took place.
For many years, the school has represented the Navy at military parades in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
