One of the many buildings that belonged to an enterprising merchant family

Pyotr Stepanovich Eliseev is the founder of the famous dynasty of merchants who opened a store on Nevsky Prospect. Since 1824, P.S. Eliseev leased part of the warehouse premises in house No. 16 on Birzhevaya Liniya, where he organized a wine trade.

In the sixties, his son, Grigory Petrovich Eliseev, bought the house and a plot of land. On this site, the architect N.P. Grebenka built a four-story apartment building. Now it is located at Birzhevaya Liniya, 14. There were shops, apartments and an office there.

The following people lived in this house: Tchaikovsky Pyotr Ilyich, Mikhail Klodt, Ivan Shishkin, Efim Volkov, Ivan Kramskoy, Alexander Beggrov, Grigory Myasoedov, Nikolai Vvedensky and Arkhip Kuindzhi.

After the revolution, the buildings on Birzhevaya Line, which belonged to the Eliseevs, were transferred to the State Optical Institute. In the nineties, houses No. 14 and No. 16 were transferred to LITMO. The main entrance to the university is decorated with a twisted canopy. The building is huge, and it can be divided into three parts: the Museum of Optics, the technology park and the educational part. Until 2014, a monument to Steve Jobs in the form of a huge smartphone was located in the courtyard of the house.
