University Embankment (until the end of the 18th century Kadetskaya, until 1887 Bolshaya Neva Embankment), on the right bank of the Bolshaya Neva, between Birzhevaya Square and the 6th Line of Vasilievsky Island; on the opposite bank - Krasnogo Flota Embankment. It appeared in the early 18th century. It is connected to the left bank of the Bolshaya Neva by the Palace Bridge and the Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the palace of A. D. Menshikov (see Menshikov Palace) and the palace of Peter II were built.
In 1718-34, the building of the Kunstkamera was erected (now the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, the Museum of M. V. Lomonosov). In 1722-42, the building of the Twelve Collegia was built, and since 1819 the university has been located here.
In 1756-59, the wing and riding school of the 1st Cadet Corps (building 13) were built, in 1764-88 — the building of the Academy of Arts (building 17),
in 1783-85 — the building of the Academy of Sciences (building 5), in 1794 — the rector's wing of the university (building 9; rebuilt in 1840-42, architect A. F. Shchedrin),
in 1826-32 — the southern warehouse of the Stock Exchange (building 1; since 1896 the Zoological Museum, since 1931 — the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences).
In 1804-10, 1831-34, a granite embankment was built.
In 1832-34, a pier was built (architect K. A. Ton); sphinxes brought from Egypt were installed, as well as bronze lamps (girandoles, based on the drawings of the architect Ton).
In 1818, the Rumyantsev Obelisk, transferred from the Field of Mars (erected in honor of P. A. Rumyantsev), was installed on the parade ground of the cadet corps (on the site between the 1st and 2nd lines of Vasilievsky Island),
in 1866-67, a garden was laid out around it (architect N. N. Kovrigin), where fountains were built in the 1880s (sculptor D. I. Jensen).
