The Saint Petersburg State Conservatory named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov is one of the most famous music universities in the world and the first higher educational institution of professional music education in Russia. It was founded in 1862 on the initiative of the Imperial Russian Musical Society.

The first graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory was Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Among the outstanding graduates are Dmitry Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Georgy Sviridov, Evgeny Mravinsky, Vasily Solovyov-Sedoy, Mariss Jansons, Irina Bogacheva, Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, Grigory Sokolov. Today, more than 1,000 instrumentalists, symphony orchestra and academic choir conductors, vocalists, composers, musicologists, musical theater directors, and choreographers study at 6 faculties and 28 departments.


The Conservatory is an invariably active participant in the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, holds regional, all-Russian and international competitions and festivals, master classes by outstanding musicians from Russia and abroad. The most significant projects are the International Conservatory Week festival, the Saint Petersburg International Opera Singers Competition, the Review Competition of Vocalists-Graduates of Music Universities of Russia, the Three Centuries of Classical Romance and Baltic Music Academy festivals, and the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition of Performers on Wind and Percussion Instruments.
