The Wege House
Rimskogo-Korsakova pr., 41
Apartment house in neoclassical style near the Mariinsky Theatre
The apartment house on the corner of Rimsky-Korsakov prospect and the Kryukov Canal embankment was built in 1912-1914 by architect Sergei Ovsyannikov and military engineer Ivan Stavitsky. The site on which it stands had changed owners several times, until entrepreneur Robert Wege bought it in 1912.
The building has six floors with an attic. The house was built for renting apartments to wealthy tenants, so it provided all contemporary amenities: elevator, electricity, heating, cold and hot water supply. The facade of the building is richly decorated with pilasters, bas-reliefs and floral ornaments. The arcade windows and balcony grilles are reminiscent of the Romanesque style. The central entrance to the courtyard is decorated with huge Atlanteans — the second largest in St. Petersburg after the Atlanteans of the Hermitage.
Officials, high-ranking officers and culture persons used to rent apartments in the Wege house. Artists of the Mariinsky Theatre also lived here. Among the most famous residents were composers Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky, singer Fyodor Chaliapin, painter Igor Grabar.
