The Resurrection Smolny Cathedral is an active Orthodox church and an outstanding architectural monument of the XVIII century.

The foundation of the cathedral was laid on October 30, 1748, by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. The cathedral was consecrated on July 20, 1835, 87 years after its foundation. The cathedral's design was created by the architect F.B. Rastrelli, and the church's interior was designed by architect V.P. Stasov in the early XIX century.

The cathedral's bell tower features an observation deck, which offers a view of the Neva River and the historic district of Peski from a height of 50 meters. To reach the top, one must climb 278 steps.

Church services are held in the cathedral daily.
