Pyshechnaya (Doughnut shop) on Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street
Iconic gastronomic attraction included in the “Red Book of memorable places of St. Petersburg”
The legendary Pyshechnaya has been operating since 1958 and is very popular up to this day. It is worth to mention, that the service here is fast, that is why even a queue will not diminish the joy of eating a truly Leningrad treat. The interior, the style of service and even the prices get the customers back to the unique atmosphere of the Soviet Union. The dessert itself is of Russian origin. The researchers say that for the first time the recipe of “pyshka” (doughnut) was published in the “New Confectionary and Cookery Book”, the edition of 1817, and that St. Petersburg is the first city in the world where pyshechnaya (doughnut shop) appeared in 1871. Here a general and a simple worker could have a meal at neighbouring tables. Today St. Petersburg “pyshki” (doughnuts) and coffee “from a keg” are still loved by representatives of different social classes, from students to oligarchs. One of the regular customers of Pyshechnaya is Mikhail Boyarsky, the People’s Artist of the RSFSR. It is interesting, that the recipe for making “pyshki” (doughnuts) and coffee, as well as the menu, has not changed over the past 50 years.
