“The legend is fresh but is trusted hardly”

… that the grand opening of the monument to A.S. Griboyedov, an outstanding writer, poet, playwright, composer, pianist, diplomat, took place only 30 years after the decision to install it. Ultimately, the installation of the monument was planned to coincide with the 130th anniversary of the death of the great figure. Unfortunately, due to bureaucratic difficulties, the opening of the monument was postponed again and took place only 9 months later, on November 23, 1959.

A.S. Griboyedov wrote many plays, but he entered the history of the Russian theatre by writing the immortal work "Woe from Wit". The sculpture is symbolically located opposite the Theatre of the Young Spectator. The author is depicted sitting on a chair with a book in his hand. The figure of the poet is made of bronze with a height of 3 meters and is mounted on a pedestal of gray polished granite with a height of almost 4 meters. The authors of the sculpture, artist V.V. Lishev and architect V.I. Yakovlev, managed to convey the "rebellious" spirit of the writer, as well as his insight and intelligence. Historians and researchers of the life of A.S. Griboyedov claim that the monument really reflects the temper and character of the writer. The inscription "Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov" is carved in gold letters on the pedestal.
