Kronshtadt, Museum Square
Kronstadt, Leningradskaya Str., 2
The formation of the square, which nowadays is called the Museum Square, can be attributed to the time of the construction of a new building for a water-lifting machine. According to historical documents, at the direction of Nicholas I, the building was placed in such a way that “it would be at the same distance from the St. Petersburg Gates as the Lutheran Church opposite, so that a regular square would form.”
Now the architectural composition of the square consists of:
Kronstadt History Museum, located in the former city water supply building;
Square near the museum building, which houses the largest in St. Petersburg horizontal Sundial of the World, "Kronstadt Water Carrier" sculpture-fountain and the Street Museum of Sculpture made out of garbage collected within the city and on the shore of the Gulf of Finland;
Petersburg Gate, built in 1831-1832, later rebuilt for use first as a guardhouse, then as a military prison;
Epiphany of the Lord "Savior-on-Waters" stone chapel built for the 200th anniversary of Kronstadt in memory of the dismantled wooden Church of the Epiphany;
German-Latvian Lutheran Church of St. Elizabeth, built in 1834-1836.
