Church Of Shestokovskaya Icon Of The Mother Of God
10, Starorusskaya street
The Georgian Orthodox Church in the historical district Peski
The building was conceived as a five-domed stone church with a bell tower for the metochion of the Shestokovsky Ascension Convent of the Tver eparchy. The construction was carried out from 1897 to 1900 under the direction of eparchial architect Nikolai Nikonov. John of Kronstadt participated in the consecration of the church. He also collected part of the money for the construction of the temple. Among other benefactors were residents of St. Petersburg P.M. Stepanov and P.M. Kumovich.
After the closure of the church in 1932, its appearance underwent changes. The drum bases and domes with crosses were demolished, and the interior spaces were redeveloped. In 1993, when the church was transferred to the Georgian community "Iveria", the church looked already close to its original appearance. Restoration work lasted 10 years and was carried out at the expense of the parish with the support of Georgian entrepreneurs of St. Petersburg. The images of saints for the iconostasis were created in the Georgian iconographic manner by the artist Zauri Tskhadaya and his sons.
The architecture of the building refers to the samples of the XVIII century tent-domed churches of Moscow and Yaroslavl and includes two temples: upper and lower. Services are conducted in two languages: Georgian and Church Slavonic.
